| Don Spencer
As an adult entertainer Don Spencer's had a career which any performer would die for. As a children's entertainer, he's an absolute legend. Put the two together, and you've got the most remarkable and versatile performer the Australian entertainment industry has seen in years. Whilst known primarily in Australia for his incredible appeal in entertaining children, not many would know the other side of Don Spencer - that of a hugely successful singer/songwriter, TV and radio presenter, and actor. From the time Don burst onto the British pop music scene with his smash hit recording of Fireball XL5, which was the theme song for the world-wide hit series of the same name, to an appearance in the Barry Humphries' film Barry McKenzie Holds His Own. Don has certainly had a busy and illustrious career. |

As one of the UK's most popular pop singers, Don performed three national tours with The Rolling Stones, as well as touring with The Four Seasons, The Hollies, Marianne Faithfull and many other world famous artists. Says Don, "For a boy from the bush it was amazing to find myself in the middle of the hysteria that surrounded the British pop scene."
With his singing and songwriting at its peak, Don approached television with equal enthusiasm. There he flourished, presenting his own teenage pop show, Gangway!, for seven years, during which time his guests included The Animals, Tom Jones, Cilla Black and Engelbert Humperdink, to name a few. "They were incredible times. It was great to be apart of the musical revolution that took place in England at that time, which up to that point was dominated by US artists."
His confidence and popularity established, Don also co-hosted Pop-In, one of the most famous BBC pop shows ever - a showcase for anybody who was anybody in the music industry. Showing his versatility, Don turned his hand to comedy, appearing in the long-running BBC series, Let's Face It with Ronnie Barker. Having the opportunity to work with such a master comedian as Ronnie Barker is one of the highlights of Don's career.
During this time, Don and his young family returned to Australia for periods to perform. Don's popularity soared. He was given his own tonight show to compere in Perth for Channel 9, and following that were regular appearances on Bandstand, as well as TV programs including The King's Men, Sons & Daughters, and Return to Eden. He performed regularly on The Mike Walsh Show and In Melbourne Tonight.
Don's parallel career in the children's entertainment industry continued to grow. He hosted Play School, his favourite program, simultaneously in Australia and England for 17 years, the only presenter ever to do so. He's made several long-running series for BBC Children's Television and has written and recorded dozens of gold and platinum children's albums and videos - among them Feathers Fur or Fins, Don Spencer's Australian Animal Songs and Don Spencer's Australia for Kids.
His shows for children are booked-out. He's worked in every part of Australia - from places with 8 kids to 80,000, as well as having time to do an extraordinary amount of charity work, which has earned him the Heart of Variety Award for services to charity.
More recently, Don was the only Australian children's performer to be invited to the New Music Seminar in New York, where he received a standing ovation from music industry peers and the young audience, who unanimously judged him their favourite! A testament to Don's universal appeal. Following this performance, The New York Times dubbed him 'The Crocodile Dundee of Kids Music' in a two page spread - great praise indeed.
